Diez años después del comienzo de la era Meiji, un espadachín vaga por Tokyo para encontrar una nueva vida junto a sus amigos, tratando de escapar de su pasado, el mayor asesino del Bakumatsu, y jurando no volver a matar.
Una antigua amenaza se cierne sobre la nueva era Meiji, el villano conocido como Makoto Shishio, el sucesor del Hitokiri Battousai que desapareció de repente al final del Bakumatsu. Shishio y su Juppon Gatana se están preparando para comenzar una revolución y corregir los actos erroneos de la influencia occidental.
